Do you know the story of the Princess Issa?

In myth, she was called the Redeemer.

It was said this child would stop the madness of war.

That she was to usher in a new age of peace and compassion.

I was given memories of a world I will never see.

Loyalty to a king I cannot serve.

And love for a chid I could not save.

What do you think they want?

Everything.

I found her.

The Scargiver.

I am a child of war.

I was taught that love is weakness.

There is a difference between justice and revenge.

There is a price to pay for your defiance.

One moment.

I do love this part.

Hold on.

I don’t want no trouble.

We’re not here to bring any.

Are you ready?

You and I both know fear.

Let’s show them we’re not afraid.

Let’s show them we’re more than the shackles that bind us.

The king is a man, and a man can fail.

But a myth is indestructible.

The time has come.

For all that you love.

Protect each other, and show them no mercy.

Who among you is willing to die for what we believe?

Grammar Point

In this lesson, we will:
– identify passive voice used in the video
– learn how to use verb be + to + base form

PASSIVE VOICE
In passive voice, the subject of the sentence receives the action of the verb.
In other words, the object of the active voice sentence becomes the subject of the passive voice sentence.

For example:
– the active voice sentence: “The cat ate the mouse”
– the passive voice sentence: “The mouse was eaten by the cat.”

How to form passive voice:
subject + verb be + past participle (+ by + object)

In myth, she was called the Redeemer.
she = subject
was = verb be
called = past participle of the verb “call”

It was said this child would stop the madness of war.
it = subject
was = verb be
said = past participle of the verb “say”

I was given memories of a world I will never see.
I = subject
was = verb be
given = past participle of the verb “give”

I was taught that love is weakness.
I = subject
was = verb be
taught = past participle of the verb “teach”

VERB BE + TO + BASE FORM
That she was to usher in a new age of peace and compassion.

The pattern “verb be + to + base form” is a formal construction that is used either:
– to give an instruction or command, or
– to tell what is going to happen in the future.

In the following three sentences, the pattern signals that these are commands.
This makes the sentences sound serious and formal.
– You are to do your homework without watching any TV.
– The students are not to travel by subway without a friend.
– [Patient speaking to nurse] The doctor says that I’m to make an appointment to come back next month.

In the following sentences, the pattern tells us that these sentences are about planned or scheduled events.
– The plane is to take off at 9pm.
– The new kitchen cabinets are to arrive before December 20th.
– Their house is to be sold right away.

These sentences sound formal.
If we change the verb construction to “verb be + going + to + verb,” they retain the same meaning but sound less formal.
– The plane is going to take off at 9am.
– The new kitchen cabinets are going to arrive before December 20th.
– Their house is to going to be sold right away.

Common Expressions

price to pay
There is a price to pay for your defiance.

The phrase “price to pay” means the cost or sacrifice that must be made in order to achieve something. It can be literal, such as the amount of money that must be spent to buy something, or it can be figurative, such as the loss of time, energy, or happiness.

For example, if you want to get a good education, you may have to pay for tuition, books, and other expenses. This is the literal price to pay. But you may also have to sacrifice your free time and social life in order to study. This is the figurative price to pay.
